Posnania elegans Poloniae civitas
– Poznan, a beautiful city in Poland
says latin inscription being the oldest surviving depiction of the town. Thanks to its position almost in the half way between Berlin and Warsaw, Poznan is many visitors' first taste of Poland In many ways it is the ideal introduction, as no other city is more closely identified with Polish nationhood (the name of Poland derives from a Slav tribe called Polonians). Being a capital of the historical region of Greater Poland (Wielkopolska) nowadays it is a city of great diversity, encompassing a traquil cathedral quarter, prussian emperor's castle, animated centre focused on one of the world's finest squares with polish royal castle and town hall - „Pearl of Renaissance north of Italy”- and a dynamic business district whose trade fair is the most important in the country.
A brace of fine museums and a wealth of nightlife opportunities ensure that a couple of days are well spent here It is also a good base from which to explore the region's other key attractions: Gniezno- the ancient seat of Poland's first rulig dynasty of Piasts, iron-age village Biskupin, english-styled castle in Kornik, palace in Rogalin – seat of many polish nobles from the eminent Poznan and Wielkopolska National Park.
